CEPCO – Centre Epaule Coude

Collaboration of physicians in the service of patient health

Goran Bezina, emblematic defender of Geneva Servette Hockey Club (GSHC) has just re-signed for a fourteenth year.
With more than 800 matches in the national league under his belt, injuries are common. Injured in December 2017, he was operated at Hirslanden Clinic La Colline very quickly.
The treatment chosen by his surgeon, Dr. Gregory Cunningham, a specialist at the Center de l’Epaule, and Professor Jacques Menetrey from the Center for Sports Medicine and Exercise allowed Goran an accelerated return to the ice. A major asset for the clinic which specializes, among others, in orthopedics, traumatology and sports medicine. Synergies useful to the rapid rehabilitation of the patient, sporty or not. Exclusive meeting with the player and his surgeon.
“A rupture of the tendon of the biceps, that’s it? “ Funny Goran Bezina addresses Dr. Gregory Cunningham, who specializes in orthopedic surgery and trauma at the Center de l’Epaule. What endure an operation and several weeks of rehabilitation before being back on the ice.
Whether on the ice, in preparation or in recovery, the various doctors and specialists at the Center of Sports Medicine and Exercise Clinic La Colline, official medical partner of the GSHC, are present alongside hockey players on a daily basis for a personalized medical follow-up. As for Dr. Gregory Cunningham, specialist of the shoulder, he intervened to operate Goran Bezina and to follow his reeducation. “We are working closely with the Center’s doctors. We communicate a lot to share our feedback and experience from the field, to potentially adapt our treatments. We operated on Goran in partnership with Professor Jacques Menetrey, one of the Center’s doctors who follows the Servette players. “ Goran jokes: “I know Jacques well, he told me that I could have total confidence in Gregory”.
This synergy is a real strength for Clinique La Colline. Physicians work “hand in hand” with teams of multidisciplinary specialists and centers of orthopedics and radiology. They share a common vision of dealing with trauma and disorders. When asked about his follow-up by the medical staff of the clinic, Goran Bezina praises and particularly appreciated this relay between doctors: “I saw Gregory three times after the operation, especially for he made sure of the good progress of my rehabilitation, and in parallel, I was followed by Jacques. It is very appreciable and much simpler that both practice in the same clinic, the message passes faster. The same goes for the reeducation phase of the player, essentially consisting of physiotherapy sessions.
Dr. Cunningham explains, “The Center’s team of physiotherapists works in partnership with the club’s team. As a surgeon, I intervened with the reeducators to define and validate the stages of rehabilitation: in the case of Goran, to find the extension of the elbow first then the strength of the biceps through muscle toning sessions. A great success for a winning duo.
